See what biometric attendance changes at your institution
Before vs. after adding biometric attendance to iVake
Where you are today
Holding you back
Signatures for absent friends
In a large lecture hall, a signed sheet or a called name is easy to answer for someone who is not there.
Pain point
Roll call at the start of every period
Teachers spend the opening minutes of each class calling names while the room waits.
Pain point
A device that does not talk to the ERP
The biometric reader keeps its own database, and punches arrive as a spreadsheet someone imports and fixes every week.
Pain point
Shortages found at exam time
A student slips under the attendance line in September, and the family finds out when the hall ticket is withheld.
Pain point
- 2+Registers to reconcile, device and ERP
- MinutesOf each period spent on roll call
- WeeksBefore a family hears
Your institution, transformed
Everything connected
A punch that needs the person
A fingerprint cannot be lent, and each punch is written against a named student, a device and a time.
Solved
Class starts on time
Students punch on entry, and the teacher confirms the class on a phone instead of calling it out.
Solved
One register, not two
Punches from biometric devices and RFID cards land in the same register as the teacher app, with nothing to import.
Solved
Shortages flagged while they can be fixed
Every student is checked against your threshold each day, and exam eligibility follows the register.
Solved
- 1Register for device, card and phone
- 0Device exports to reconcile
- Same dayParent alert on an absence

Proxy attendance stopped at the point of entry
An attendance mark should belong to the student who was in the room. Each punch is tied to a student record, a device and a time, so a mark can always be traced to where it came from.
- Punches from fingerprint devices and RFID cards read into the student’s own record
- Devices with liveness detection reject moulds and printed prints, where your hardware supports it
- Unusual card patterns, such as one card tapped twice in quick succession, flagged for review
Teaching time back from the roll call
Teachers should not spend the first minutes of every period reading names aloud. Students punch as they come in, the timetable says which class the punch belongs to, and a late arrival is recorded as late.
- Punches matched to the period the timetable has in that room
- Arrival time kept, so late is recorded as late rather than absent
- On-duty and medical leave recorded as what they are, not as absence
Attendance parents and staff see the same day
A punch should reach the people who need it that day, not when a register is typed up weeks later. Parents are told about an absence or a late arrival, and anyone falling below your line is flagged.
- Absence and late messages to parents by WhatsApp, SMS or email the same day
- Attendance in the parent app next to results, fees and notices
- A shortage list against your threshold, updated with every register
Biometric attendance features
Everything you need to run device attendance effectively
Fingerprint devices
Punches from biometric devices read into the attendance register.
RFID & smart cards
Card taps recorded in the same register as fingerprints and the app.
Timetable matching
Each punch matched to the period scheduled in that room.
Late & shortage flags
Late arrivals marked late, and shortages flagged against your threshold.
Fallback to the app
Teachers mark the class in the app, offline if need be, when a device is down.
Parent alerts
Absence and late messages sent the same day by WhatsApp, SMS or email.
Staff attendance
Staff punches and phone check-ins recorded against payroll.
Audit trail
Every mark and correction logged with who made it and the previous value.
Frequently asked questions
Get answers to common questions about biometric attendance
What happens when a device goes offline during the day?
Teachers mark the class in the teacher app, which works offline and syncs later, so the register is never left empty. When the device reconnects, stored punches are read in with their original times, and the register shows which method each mark came from.
How do we enrol fingerprints for a whole school or college?
Fingerprints are enrolled on the devices themselves, usually alongside ID cards and document checks at the start of the year. iVake links each enrolled device ID to the student record, so a new admission can be enrolled on the device the day they join.
Can the same devices handle class attendance and the exam hall?
Yes. For daily classes a punch is matched to the period in that room. For examinations, a punch at the hall is recorded against the candidate’s hall ticket, and exam eligibility is already computed from the attendance on record.
How are fake fingerprints and lent cards handled?
Protection against fake prints depends on the device: readers with liveness detection reject moulds and printed prints at the sensor. Cards can be lent, so unusual patterns, such as one card tapped twice in quick succession, are flagged for the class teacher.
Do we need a separate server or attendance software?
No. Punches from biometric devices and RFID cards are read into the same attendance record as the teacher app, so there is one register rather than two to reconcile. The devices and their network connection are yours; tell us the make and model and we will confirm how yours connects.
What about students whose fingerprints do not scan?
Some prints do not read reliably because of an injury or a skin condition. Those students can use an RFID card or be marked in the teacher app, the reason is noted on their record, and their attendance counts the same.
Can staff attendance come from the same devices?
Staff can punch on the same devices or check in from a phone, but only inside the campus boundary you draw. Staff attendance is recorded against payroll, and approved leave updates the register.
How do we report attendance for inspections or returns?
Attendance is recorded per subject and per activity with its date, so the figures for an inspection, a university return or an accreditation criterion are read from the register and exported, not counted from paper.
